EAST LANSING - The first round of the MHSAA playoffs took place tonight. The East Lansing Trojans faced off with the Haslett Vikings at Lynn C. Adams stadium.
In the first quarter the trojans get on the board first with a strong series getting them down field quickly. A catch made by #7 Jack Morse, Senior brought the trojans inside the 10 yard line.
Penalties are what caused the Trojans to lose that gain. But in the next play they would get it back as Quarterback Joe Benbraham, Senior, sat back in the shotgun, received the hike and placed the ball in the air for Wide Receiver, Andrel Anthony to complete the pass.
Getting the Trojans on the board first, after the field goal was confirmed, score was 7-0 in the later half of the 1st quarter.
The Haslett Vikings offense was held to 4 downs resulting in a turnover with a punt received by Senior #2 Kaleb Elam. Hard stop by Haslett defense on the 32 yard line.
Jumping to the 2nd quarter the Haslett Vikings Offense is trying to get some production going with key player, #5 Benjamin Brittain, but the East Lansing defense stood strong with players such as #3 Pierre Butler making huge stops.
The Vikings kick the ball to get on the board. Score is East Lansing 7-3 Haslett.
#1 Corey Hayward receives the ball on a handoff and banks it in for the Trojans bringing the score up 14-3. Haslett Vikings Offense returns with a wide open pass to the corner of the end zone.
Coming out of the half the Trojans led the vikings with a 24-16 lead. But the Vikings defense didn’t give up as they had 2 interceptions for yard gains and a fumble recovery bringing them to first down.
The Vikings offense capitalized on the work done by the defense and scored a touchdown.
The 4th quarter bought a great deal of competition for both teams resulting in a touchdown and field goal for East Lansing bringing the score up to 33-25. But the vikings stayed tough and strong and scored again coming within 3 points of the Trojans.
Both teams did a great job in the first round of the MHSAA Football playoffs, but the East Lansing Trojans would close out the game with quarterback Joe Benbraham taking a knee.
Final Score was East Lansing 33-Haslett 30. The Trojans will face off against Dewitt in the next round on Friday November 2, 2018. Kickoff at 7PM.
