HOMTV Intern Reflects on Internship Experience

HOMTV Intern Reflects on Internship Experience

OKEMOS - As my time at HOMTV comes to an end, I can’t begin to explain how appreciative and grateful I am for this entire experience.

Before I interned at HOMTV, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life; I was confused and had no idea what my purpose was. When Executive Producer Brandie Yates interviewed me for this internship, she asked me why I deserved this internship. At that moment, I had been rejected by so many people and internships that I was completely honest with her and said, “I’m tired of getting rejected and I just need someone to give me a chance.” Brandie gave me a chance by offering me an internship at HOMTV two weeks later and I am forever grateful for that.

I truly believe that HOMTV offers the most hands-on, one-of-a-kind internship. This is the only company that hires interns with little to no experience and trains them to be incredible reporters, producers and social media specialists, with intensive workshops and on-the-job training.

HOMTV is an amazing place to work because it gives interns the opportunity to figure out what they are most passionate about. I was a social media and promotions my first semester but I was given the freedom to dabble into reporting and anchoring the live newscast, which ultimately helped me make the decision to be a reporting intern this past semester.

This past semester was difficult and stressful at times but I’m so grateful for that because it taught me how to be a good reporter and how I can improve. As I prepare to say goodbye to HOMTV and move on to my next adventure (studying abroad in the United Kingdom), I leave with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to be a successful journalist, no matter what path I decide to take in this incredible field.

While interning at HOMTV, I got to cover stories I could have only dreamed of, like a recent Larry Nassar hearing and opening day for the Lansing Lugnuts Minor League Baseball team; no other internships give interns these incredible opportunities. I am most grateful to HOMTV for helping me find my confidence again and creating such a tight-knit community where I made incredible friends.

Before I interned at HOMTV, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I wasn’t sure if journalism was the right field for me. As my internship comes to an end, I leave with amazing friends, an incredible network, confidence, a dream to be a reporter and memories to last a lifetime.

I hope that every intern who walks through HOMTV’s doors has an amazing experience like I did and that they love it just as much as I have.

Thank you for everything, HOMTV.
