Pipe Collapses Under Okemos Road

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - More orange barrels have made their way to Okemos Road.

Last week, the Ingham County Drain Office recognized 50 feet of the mile-long Grettenberger Drainpipe under Okemos Road south of Grand River Avenue was failing. That pipe collapsed yesterday after pressure was put on the pipe's tiles, installed in the 1913.

LSG Engineers and Surveyors and Barnard and Sons Excavation have begun replacing the old clay pipes with new plastic ones, a process expected to take two to three days. The Ingham County Drain Office expects to replace the rest of the Grettenberger Drain within four years.

The construction will temporarily make the multi-lane Okemos Road a two-way street. Township police say there have been traffic issues near the construction area, with some cars cutting through cones to access the left turn lane. Drivers are reminded to not go around cones.
