OKEMOS - The Okemos Athletic Department hosted their inaugural 'Career in Sports Night' Wednesday, April 18th at Okemos High School. This event gave students the opportunity to network with sports industry professionals and representatives from sports-focused college majors.
Ira Childress, Okemos High School Athletic Director and event organizer, had this to say, "Oh, it's been absolutely amazing. It feels really good to see all of our students get all this great information from these great professionals that are in the field with experience, and also from the professors at the universities."
The keynote speaker for the evening was Okemos High School Alumna Cynthia Frelund. She currently works as a predictive analytics expert for the NFL Network and flew all the way from Los Angeles to attend the event. "This is a really nice event. Turn out is great. It feels really special to be here, so it's really well done."
Stan Shingles, Assistant Vice President of University Recreation at Central Michigan University, was also one of the panelists in attendance. "This is very unique. Normally this experience is oftentimes something that happens once students get to campus. I always say there are three things that you need, and that is experience, experience, experience."
