LANSING - It was a chilly weekend, but that didn't stop thousands of Lansing Lugnuts fans from taking advantage of the $0.35 tickets and watching the Lansing Lugnuts take on the Great Lakes Loons in the home opener on April 7 at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The game was originally set to start at 7:05 p.m. but got pushed up to start at 5:35 p.m. with ticket prices lowered to just $0.35. These changes were made with hope of attracting more fans to the chilly game.
The top of the first inning was a quick one for the Lansing Lugnuts, with two walks, a ground out and a double play to end the inning.
The bottom of the first inning is when the Lugnuts took the lead, with six walks, a walk-in run and a wild pitch at home that led Lugnuts shortstop Kevin Vicuña to stealing home. They ended the inning with a 2-0 lead against the Great Lakes Loons.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Loons were on their third pitcher when a wild pitch at home and a wild throw to first led center fielder Reggie Pruitt and shortstop Kevin Vicuña running home and extending the lead 4-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, the score was 4-2 after a solo home-run and a base hit brought in two runs for the Loons. The Loons tied the game 4-4 when third baseman Jared Walker hit a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lugnuts' right fielder Brock Lundquist's broken bat led to an out at first but he advanced third baseman Kevin Smith which eventually led to a 6-4 win against the Loons.
With a 6-4 win in their home opener, Lugnuts' manager César Martin was happy with the team's progress so far.
“It’s only the second game right now, so, the way that they go about the game, everybody tries to pay attention to the game and play hard so, pretty good so far," Martin said.
