OKEMOS - Antonio Cruz of Cruz Control Fitness is looking to change the community one Zumba step at a time.
Cruz who is originally from Mexico, made his journey to the United States almost 10 years ago. He found a love for fitness and Zumba, during his transition to Michigan.
“It’s difficult to come to this country especially alone, in my case it was adapting to everything new. I remember starting high school and learning English, then starting college, and while adapting to the language I also adapted to the community,” said Cruz.
In 2009 his life took a turn. When he was a teenager, he was kidnapped for two weeks.
From there he started to motivate himself, and he started dancing.
“Zumba can burn about 700 calories for 50 minutes. You can get a good workout, and be a good dancer.”
Today he is a personal trainer as well as a Zumba Instructor at Court One East and Court One North.
“This is by far the most energetic, most fun Zumba Class. It takes us a while to get the steps but once we do we all have fun. I come as many times as he offers class,” said Zumba Participant, Deb Hallgren.
Cruz also founded Test Magazine which promotes local fitness right here in the community.
“The whole point of the magazine was to attract the community to get in shape not only physical but mentally,” he said.
And has the winter months are officially here to stay, he has one suggest.
“Don't stay on the couch, hide the remote control, get out of the house, especially now its important.”
