EAST LANSING, MI - The Deer Hunting Archery season is one week a way. Meridian Township put the process in gear, beginning with the Deer Control Archery Workshop. In the past, Meridian Township has documented hundreds of complaints related to deer over-population.
The Deer Management Program was created in 2011. The program is not open to the general public, you must be a Meridian Township resident. Hunters apart of the program are required to attend the archery workshop session at MSU's Demmer Center.
The workshop happened Wednesday, with over 50 hunters in tow. Hunters asked questions from how can they store/refrigerate their deer to where are the processing centers. Parks and Land Management coordinator Jane Greenway was happy to answer any questions or concerns the hunters had.
After the workshop, hunters had to do an equipment check, followed by the proficiency test. The proficiency test included the hunters using their bow and arrow to get a precise shot on the bulls-eye target of 18-20 yards. The hunters were accompanied by award winning MSU archery coach Glenn Bennett while doing their proficiency test.
A few important reminders for hunters this season include: Post your flyer in your vehicle's window alerting the public that hunting is in progress, wearing the proper orange while hunting, notify the Township on which days you are planning to hunt and lastly make sure that you are getting your deer tested for (CWD) Chronic Waisting Disease.
The Archery season begins October 1st through January 1st.
