OKEMOS - It’s that time of year again as Okemos School of Choice applications have been out since June 1st and are concluding June 15th this year. The applications are open to families in the Ingham County area who are looking to enroll their kids within the Okemos Public Schools District based on the vacancies they have and for each grade level, from preschool to 12th grade.
Superintendent Dr. Catherine Ash gives a more detailed list of steps for applying for the School of Choice application,
"The application is open to parents and students who are non residents of Okemos, but live in the Ingham County area and are interested in enrolling their kids into the Okemos schools."
"After the parents fill out the hard copy of the application they must also submit documentations of the child's discipline to ensure the student hasn't been suspended or expelled from the previous school and verification of their current address to ensure that they are in fact residents of Ingham County."
The administration determines how many vacancies there are at the end of the school year before opening the applications. All applications are submitted to Rihanna Walworth and Dr. Ash as they organize all applicants by grade level and if they have any siblings currently enrolled in the school of their choice. All applicants that applied for the School of Choice are entered in through a spreadsheet for the review process.
The administration staff then checks the amount of vacancies available and if there's more applications than vacancies they conduct a random draw to determine which applications get accepted by the Okemos Public Schools administration.
