OKEMOS - Late in the day on June 15th, Okemos High school was the home site for the Best of the Best Football Camp. The camp is a 3 hour long program where young and rising talent from all over the state of Michigan come together to compete, develop their skills, and make long lasting relationships with coaches and other players.
This is the second year that the camp has been running and hosted at Okemos High School. The camp was organized and made possible with the help of Coach Wallace, Head Varsity Coach for Okemos High School and Athletic Director Ira Childress.
The two came together and with their relationships and connections with the other coaches throughout the Michigan area, they were able to bring in coaches from all over the area from both the high school and the collegiate level. The coaches in attendance came from schools such as East Lansing high school to Wayne State University, Saginaw Valley State University, and even Michigan State University.
Ira Childress explains what he hopes the young student athletes hope to have gotten out of the camp, "Our goal of the camp was to get student athletes in the mid Michigan area some exposure, especially those that have interest in going to the next level. We had 15-20 colleges hear today."
Jack Wallace states, "We really got a chance to see the young athletes improve their skills. We had individual group sessions along with the one-on-ones to see where the kids were at skill-wise and and where they could improve and develop on. I thought it was fun to see the kids get better as the day went on."
The program was a success this year as over 200 student athletes signed up and participated in the program. It was an overall great atmosphere as both coaches and players believe they achieved their goal in improving one another in order to take that next step to make it at the next level after high school.
