MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Families had the chance to explore over 90 Greater Lansing area attractions at the 23rd annual "Be A Tourist in Your Own Town" event.

Created by the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau, "Be A Tourist in Your Own Town" showcased local businesses and areas to residents and visitors. An estimated 15,000 people attended this year.

With a purchase of a $1 passport, visitors toured attractions such as the Lansing Art Gallery, Potter Park Zoo and Impression 5 with free admissions all day Saturday, June 3.

The Lansing Sailing Club took part in this year's "Be A Tourist in Your Own Town" by providing visitors with a free half hour boat ride on Lake Lansing.

"One of the reasons that we do this is to people, especially who have not sailed before, a taste of sailing and introduce them to something that is so adventurous they can do right in their home town," said commodore of the Lansing Sailing Club Susanna Tellschow. "A lot of people don't know that Lake Lansing is right here."

One of the new attractions added to this year's event was the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame. As a way to draw in visitors and celebrate the release of the new Wonder Woman movie, the staff transformed their store to have a "Wonder Woman" theme.

"Wonder Woman is all about girl empowerment. We have activities that will teach you about the origins of Wonder Woman and the stories of her being a part of women empowerment," said Executive Director Caitlyn Perry Dial. "We have fun activities for kids such as creating your own superhero mask and superhero character."

TinkrLab co-owner Melissa Allen took part in "Be A Tourist in Your Own Town" last year. Allen said that the event was a great way for residents and visitors to learn more about the Greater Lansing community.

"We have been seeing a lot families who are out enjoying the day. They are getting to see places they wouldn't normally come to," Allen said. "The cool thing is we are seeing family come in here and play together."
