OKEMOS - Thursday night the MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Playoffs continued at Dewitt High School as the Okemos Chieftains battled the Dexter Dreadnaughts. The winner of this game would continue on to the Regional Finals which will be on Wednesday, May 31 at Dewitt High School.
The matchup between the two schools was very defensive minded at the beginning of the game as both teams held each other scoreless in the first 5 minutes of gameplay but then things got interesting from there. Mario Gonzalez of Okemos scored the first 2 goals for the team and of the game, all of which were unassisted. However that 2-0 lead that Okemos had did not last long. Dexter came firing back as they scored 3 goals in less than a minute to put them up 3-2 against the Chieftains.
Coach VanAntwerp of Okemos however didn't feel the need to call a timeout at that point to get his team refocused. He had faith in his guys and let them play it out, which by the end of the 1st quarter, ended up tying the game at 4-4. From that point on Okemos never looked back as they went into the half up 8-5.
The second half turned into a very defensive game as both teams goalies and defense proved to be forces to reckon with. Unlike the first half where both teams scored a combined total of 12 points, the second half only saw a total of 4 goals. 3 of those 4 goals ended up being in Okemos' favor as the Chieftains went on to secure a victory against the Dreadnaughts and continue on in their journey to repeat as Regional Champions. The final score of the game was 11-6 Okemos along with Mario Gonzalez scoring 4 of the teams goals, 3 of which were unassisted.
Okemos will face Haslett/Williamston on Wednesday May 31 at 7p.m. at Dewitt High School.
