MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - With a 6-0 vote during Tuesday’s Township Board meeting, 5681 School Street was sold to Haslett Public Schools for one dollar.
On this property, a single family home went into tax foreclosure. The house was then repossessed by Ingham County for back taxes.
During conversation between Julie Brixie and Haslett Public School Superintendent Steve L. Cook, it was decided the School Street property has "future public use."
“I look forward to the removal of blight for this property,” Township Treasurer Julie Brixie said.
During the Township meeting, there was a proposed amendment to restrict what the property could become, which did not pass.
“I spoke against the restrictions because it implied a level of mistrust,” Trustee Phil Deschaine said. “We trust Haslett Public Schools and they work well with Meridian Township.”
Though restrictions were not placed on the property, there are limitations of what it could be used for because it is located adjacent from Rayla Elementary School.
So far, there has not been any discussion about what the property could be used for.
