LANSING - "If you can see one, you can be one," says Dr. Olivia Letts during her brief statement regarding celebrating women in history. Dr. Letts and other attendees were given the first look at the new 2016 Michigan Women Hall of Fame plaque.
The event took place at the Michigan Women's Historical Center. The Women's Day Reception was hosted by Interim Executive Director, Caitlyn Perry Dial. According to Perry Dial, "[the] event is to celebrate the beginning of Women's History Month. Here at the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame we honor the accomplishments and the history of Michigan women so we always love to have a big reception to welcome everyone and let them know that tonight is the night to celebrate women."
Toepher George, Docent/Fundraising & Events, agreed that women should be celebrated, "Hey, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for a woman."
Guest speaker Dr. Pamela Bellamy gave her accolades during the event with a speech by Sojourner Truth. The speech was very powerful and many women in the room were teary-eyed by the end. The line that resonated most with those in attendance, "If the first woman God ever made can turn this world upside down, then the women together can turn this world right side up again."
This will be their last event at the museum as the organization prepares to settle in their new home at the Meridian Mall, April 2017.
