EAST LANSING - "Concert for Cures" held it's first concert to raise money to help spread awareness on mental health. Founder of the foundation Murphy Nye was the star of the show, he himself who is a survivor of depression preformed a plethora of songs for supporters, friends and family. The concert also included speeches and testimonies from other survivors.

"I wanted to share my story to show people to show that depression is real and that it can be overcame," said Valentena Hanaawa, speaker from Concert from Cures. "Depression is a numb feeling, when you're depressed you don't want to do anything not even get out of bed."

Throughout the concert Nye expressed how depression affects people of all ages, races and genders. According to the Depression and Support Alliance depression disorders affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, in the United States ages 18 and older.

"There are different types of depression there is seasonal depression, postpartum, major depression and the list goes on and on," said Nye. "I personally had a chemical imbalance in my brain that made me depressed."

Specifically the money raised from the event will go towards funding for genetic testing, the same test Nye took to diagnose the type of depression he had.

Concert for Cures plans on having more concerts in the future with celebrity acts in order to bring out larger audiences.
