MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Planning Commission heard updates regarding a special use permit for Stockwell Development to build a shopping center with two drive-thru windows along Grand River Avenue and Powell Road.
Stockwell Development appeared in front of the Commission at a September 2016 meeting to request a special use permit for the site. The approval of a permit was delayed due to the need of a wetland use permit.
The Commission did not approve the request for special use permit for two drive-through windows but instead recommended one drive-thru.
The Commission did not support two drive-thru's over concerns about traffic and the potential hindering of making the area less friendly for walkers and bikers.
"The more traffic you're pulling through I think that the harder it makes it to be a walkable and bikeable area. So I think there's some challenges with not one but two drive-thru's on this site," said Commissioner Brett DeGroff.
It is still not clear what businesses or restaurants will occupy this space.
Ken Stockwell, the Developer, a start date for construction is needed before he will know which businesses will lease the space.
"It's hard to market, because to get somebody to come in we have to really give them a date so right now we are just in talk."
