EAST LANSING - With a 5-0 vote, East Lansing City Council approved the site plans for the proposed Costco Development on Park Lake Road during their meeting earlier this week.

Costco asked East Lansing and Meridian Township for a combine 1.8 million dollars to be reimbursed in construction cost to them for some of the work that need to be done to the site. East Lansing City Council approved the site plans with an agreement to pay back1.5 million dollars over the course of 15 years.

Mayor of East Lansing Mark Meadows said, "Essentially it's a loan to the communities, both Meridian Township and East Lansing and we're paying it back without interest. So it's the actual cost of the construction will be reimbursed to them with the money they pay us. So it's a good deal for both communities."

Although East Lansing approved to pay the 1.5 million, Meridian Township has an agreement to only pay back one million dollars. An agreement will now go before the Meridian Township Board stating that East Lansing will be responsible for paying back the extra point-five million dollars.

Bike racks were another issue that needed to be resolved on the proposed Costco development site plans. The original plan required Costco to provide 50 bike racks total with some indoor racks for employees as well as out door racks for employee and customer use. East Lansing approved that Costco needs to have at least 20 bike racks minimum, and 50 maximum.

Now with the site plan approval, it's up to Costco to decide if they'ed like to move forward under the current site plan conditions. If everything goes as planned, Costco is expected to start construction sometime in the spring of 2017 and open in the fall.
