MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Virginia White was born on October, 23rd 1932 in Barberton Ohio. After being elected in 1972 she served on the Meridian Township Board for 25 years, and was even nominated as clerk of the year in 1989 by the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks.
“Virginia White hired me in 1975, I worked for her until she retired. She was very professional and professionalism was very important to her. She had a great personality and knew how to treat everyone the same,” said Teresa Brazee, East Lansing Deputy City Clerk.
She also played a pivotal role in the Community Bandshell Committee. A tradition that most know today as Lake Lansing Bandshell.
“I started with Ingham County Parks in 2001 and was apart of the Community Bandshell Committee. We ended up raising enough money to get Lake Lansing Bandshell and began with only 8-10 volunteers. She was all about community and if there was a way to give back she did,” said Ingham County Park Manager, Pat Witte.
Virginia was 82-years old when she passed away on June 1, 2015. Meridian Township will always remember her for her dedication and love for the Haslett and Okemos communities.
“Virginia White was a very special person who dedicated her life to make things better for everyone she interacted with. Her commitment to exceptional public service is legendary as was her willingness to always go the extra measure to help all township stakeholders to achieve their goals. While Virginia and I didn't always agree on everything our passionate discussions were always conducted with respect and appreciation of each other's points of view. I miss her and feel bad that after she left the area I did not send her a note to share my appreciation of her being, Virginia. Im consoled in believing that this note serves that purpose,” said Meridian Township resident Ed Gillespie.
