LANSING - Michigan's legislature currently has 110 House Districts. Meridian Township falls within the 69th District along with Williamstown Township, Locke Township and parts of Lansing and East Lansing.
State Representatives are elected every two years and are allowed a three term limit. Democratic Incumbent Representative Sam Singh is now running for his third term in office. "I've been pleased over the last four years to work on a number of pieces of legislation, work on the budget to actually implement a lot of those priorities, and now I wanna look for those last two years to be able to finish it off, " said Singh.
This year, Representative Singh is running against Republican Candidate George Nastas III. If elected, Candidate Nastas said he wants to apply, "My expertise in finance and economics and an interest in public policy, to the issues that are important to the people in the community."
Both candidates are running very different campaigns. Candidate Nastas has focused on going door-to-door passing out literature, "I've had 5,000 of these literature printed up and I've been to over 4,500 houses so far passing out that literature," he said.
As for Representative Singh, his committee has done some campaigning, but Singh explained, "So we're putting up lawn signs, going to community events and so fourth, but we're really spending our time when we would normally go door-to-door in our own community around the state. Uh trying to make sure that we help other Democrats uh get elected."
Representative Singh wants to see himself and other Democrats elected to the State Legislature in hopes for, "A Democratic majority, so we can focus on those issues; like education, economic development of the environment, that have been so keen to my last four years here in office," Singh explained.
While Candidate Nastas explained, "Small government, low taxes, low regulation, economic growth and prosperity for people in the community," are the issues he'll focus on if elected to the State Legislature.
With less than 30-days until the election, the community will soon decide who they would like to see represent there district for the next two years.
