OKEMOS - Seasons are ending and the win-or-go-home games are forcing teams to work harder than ever.
The Okemos volleyball team swept Lansing Eastern, 3-0, in the CAAC Blue tournament opener in the Ozone on Tuesday.
The focus was which of the two teams would survive and move on to the next round of the championship, but both teams put on the pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Set one starts and Okemos comes out with authority in their starting lineup: Natalie Thom, Shanie Miller, Ryan Castle, Sage VanAlstine, Nishi Patel and Catherine Irwin.
Irwin, the Chiefs Libero, served most of the first set, and tallied most of the 25 points in aces.
Keeping the Quakers at only four points, Okemos closed out the first set, 25-4, with a Jaleh Jones serve that goes back and forth between the teams three times.
On the third, Patel received with a pass to Thom, who sets it high to VanAlstine, who kills it on the right.
The Quakers try to soften it but it explodes out of bounds on the left.
Okemos replaces their starting lineup with some of their second string players, but they play just as confidently and with visible chemistry.
Maggie Francis serves the, 25-9, victory to the second set.
Quakers' Jalisa Jones cushions it to Brittney Ebel, who sets it behind her for Hailey Hall.
Hall doesn't get high on the kill and puts the ball on the net for a Chiefs' second set win.
Two in the bag, but still one to go to complete the hat trick on the home-sweep games.
Okemos gives up 13 points in the third set, but is able to play all of its roster.
They clinch set three in a Quakers serve that comes to Francis.
Jones sets it just in front of her to Sydeny Fountain, who instead of going for the spike, she passed it over, confusing Lansing Eastern.
Lansing Eastern Jalisa Jones dove to reach it, but Amara Dixon couldn't get there in time to help.
Okemos pulls out the victory in the third set, 25-13.
The Chiefs had won their last two home matches this season, not only sweeping Lansing Everett, but also East Lansing, whose only conference loss had also been to Holt.
They head on to play in the second round of the league championship on Thursday, also at Okemos High School.
If they win on Thursday, they will potentially play Holt for the league title.
"It was really important to get this win and get it in an authoritative way, which I thought we did. I thought we did a really nice job of serving tough. Eastern is not a bad team, you know, their fundamentals have improved a lot, but we had them off balance for most of the match," head coach Jamie Ianni said.
