HASLETT - With the MHSAA finals approaching in every Fall sport, each game becomes more important than the previous one.
The St. Johns volleyball team knew the importance of tallying another "W" when they came back to win three sets in a row and defeat Haslett, 3-1, on Wednesday.
To fully understand the significance of this game, one would have to look in between the lines, of the net, that is.
Far behind on the wall, fans would see a pink sign with a breast cancer ribbon on it.
With the ribbon, there were the drawings of a football and a volleyball.
This day, October 12, honored former varsity volleyball assistant coach Colleen Pringle, who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
Light pink T-shirts with the logo plastered the full stands, supporting not only Haslett volleyball, but the former coach and current Haslett High School teacher.
Pink socks and ribbons were also seen bouncing around on the court, as the Vikings warmed up for the game.
With the life of the crowd and something meaningful to play for, Haslett seemed stronger than ever.
The Vikings took the first set, 25-23, with strong serving and fully-charged energy.
Dropping some of that perk, Haslett let their mistakes get the best of them, as St. Johns took the second set in a still close, 25-18, battle.
The Redwings were able to repeat the second set two more times, and each one of them, keeping Haslett at a lower score than in the previous set.
St. Johns won set three, 25-17, and set four, 25-11.
While the Redwings celebrated a strong finish, the Vikings talked about how they gave up a win due to simple mistakes.
From now on, senior Selah Rowe said that they will have team bonding events to improve team chemistry.
The Vikings and the Redwings will both travel to Laingsburg, Mich. on Saturday, October 15 for a tournament, according to schedulestar.com.
Despite the loss, the Vikings knew that this game's meaning was honoring a dear person to the program and school.
Having connected with the teacher during a school program, Rowe said she was very happy to have had the opportunity to support and play for Pringle.
