OKEMOS - Coming off of a tough loss to Holt last Tuesday during
Homecoming week, the Chiefs turned it around and swept Lansing Everett, 3-0.
With senior captain Ryan Castle back on the court after a kidney infection due to a spinal cord condition, the team has been optimistic in every game.
The first game was a battle of who was more warmed up at the start of the match.
Junior Breann DeLoye had multiple spikes and scored many of Okemos’ points, bringing the Chiefs to a 25-14 victory in the first game.
A quick break took the Chiefs and the Vikings to the second game.
DeLoye continued to be on fire as Okemos won the second game, 25-6, in just 15 minutes.
Only needing one more game to win the match, the Chiefs kept their energy up, but Everett was quick to answer and took advantage of Okemos’ mistakes.
Keeping the serve on their side, the Vikings tied the third set at 19.
At this point, the Chiefs were showing inconsistent passing.
Okemos played many of its second string athletes, in order for them to get experience moving forward.
Head coach Jamie Ianni said that what kept the entire team energized was how the starters were happy to see other girls play and succeed.
Okemos would eventually win the close third game, 25-21, on a spike by DeLoye.
The, 3-0, win served as a confidence booster for the young Chiefs.
Although Okemos volleyball graduated many seniors last year, it currently has nine juniors, some who are still learning the ins and outs of a varsity sport.
While developing their skills this season, it’s a reason for the Chiefs to be optimistic next year.
Okemos will follow the win with a game at Lansing Sexton next Tuesday.
