OKEMOS - Aside from having a talented soccer program, Okemos has had a very successful Tennis team.

The Chiefs won six state titles since 1999, with their last one in 2007, marking their fourth consecutive title with coach Bryan Polston.

Since that year, the Chiefs haven't showed much success in the MHSAA state competition.

This season, Okemos won their first three one-on-one team matches, including defeating last year's Dividion Two state champions Portage Central, 5-3.

Portage Central is currently No. 2 in the Division Two category, while Okemos is ranked eighth.

Last Wednesday, the Chiefs hosted Novi, the current Division One state title holders and currently No. 1 in the Division One list.

The Novi Wildcats are in search for their third consecutive state championship trophy.

Under head coach Chris Silker, Okemos put up a hard fight to continue their winning ways.

With frustration and sweat, the Chiefs managed to snag two matches, but Novi won the other six.

Many of the matches went into a tiebreaker, showing just how hard Okemos is trying to climb the rankings.

The Cheifs' current overall record is 6-5-2, and they are 1-0 in conference play.

The MHSAA state matches are one month away, taking place on November 13.
