HASLETT - It might not be the pros, might not be college, but football is back.
Chippewa Hills topped Haslett, 29-6, on Thursday’s season opener of the high school football season.
Haslett head coach Charlie Otlewski said, earlier in preseason, that this is the best team he has coached in the offseason.
Today, Otlewski said that he is disappointed.
The Warriors took the lead early in the game, scoring a touchdown with under six minutes left in the first quarter to lead, 7-0.
Haslett fails to respond, giving Chippewa Hills another chance.
Cade Schaeffer takes it, throwing to DJ Lowery for a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The Warriors close out the first quarter, 13-0.
Chippewa Hills is back on offense, and with less a minute left in the first half, they run for another touchdown, increasing the lead to 19-0.
With their heads up, the Vikings walk onto the field in the second half showing more determination and will.
In the third quarter, Haslett quarterback Darryck Walker, passes to Evan Block, who runs all the way and puts the
Vikings on the scoreboard for their first touchdown of the 2016 season.
The Vikings go for the extra point, but a forward kick sends it into the Warriors’ hands, who block it.
Since Jake Tahaney left, Haslett has had to find a quarterback replacement.
Sophomore Hyrum Tibbits replaces Walker as quarterback for the Vikings.
Heading into the final 12 minutes of play, the Warriors lead, 19-6.
Chippewa Hills takes that block energy and although they don’t go all the way, they chip it into the goal posts for a field goal.
Sixteen points ahead of the Vikings, the Warriors still don’t give out any yards.
Instead, they extend the lead, now 29-6, with another touchdown and extra point closing out both teams’ season opener.
The Warriors head coach Larry Jose said that he is very happy with the win, but that if there isn’t improvement from game one to game two, then there isn’t hope for the season.
Haslett will travel to Flushing on Thursday, September 1, while Chippewa Hills plays Fermont at home.
