MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Drivers can expect traffic to be down to one lane on Park Lake Road this week as the final stages of construction get underway.
The next step in the road resurfacing project is to complete a "hot-in-place recycling" process, where the pavement is heated and resurfaced with a fresh layer of asphalt.
Bill Conklin, the Managing Director of the Ingham County Road Department, said the impact on traffic will be minimal and there will be no more major closures.
The project is expected to be completely finished by the second week of September depending on weather conditions.
And soon, other roads in Meridian Township will get the same resurfacing treatment as Park Lake Road through the Local Road Program.
The streets and sidewalks that will be repaired next include Spring Lake Road, Adobe, Donovan, Heather Street, and Montrose. More rural roads, like Lake Drive, will undergo a process called chip sealing.
Chip sealing is done every 5-7 years and Conklin said it's a fairly routine, preventative maintenance practice that's performed on roads with a lower traffic volume.
The process involves applying a thin layer of oil and stones (chips) to the road, which Conklin warns may create a lot of debris at first but it will eventually settle and the surface will harden.
The road department is expected to sweep Lake Drive to remove excess dust and debris this week, but Conklin advises residents to drive slowly to help keep dust and chips down.
