LANSING - Adult crossing guards from the mid-Michigan area attended an annual training at the Dean Transportation Training Center in Lansing on Wednesday August 10th.
The training includes guest speakers as well as hands-on training where crossing guards practice what they will do at their cross walks.
The speakers included a local area teacher who spoke about working with kids with ADHD and a law enforcement officer who talked about speaking up when something seems off or suspicious.
Law enforcement officers like Chrissy Scaccia from Meridian Township attended because they are liaison officers for the crossing guards.
"They contact me if they have any problems with their equipment which is regulated by AAA, if they need new equipment, if they have issues with students that they might be trying to cross, if they have consistent issues or suspicious activity, I work as the liaison so that they have one point of contact at the police department," said Scaccia.
Crossing guards value involvement of law enforcement officers.
"They are our backup. So if we have people that are not stopping when they see our stop signs the first thing we do after we get our kids across safely is to call it in and make sure that we have the license plate number, the car, the person that was driving and give them a description. We have people that do that on a daily basis that don't stop for us so they endanger our lives and the kids that we're crossing," said Maricia Stoll, a crossing guard in Meridian Township.
The training takes place every year in August.
