EAST LANSING - The Michigan State Women’s Basketball team is packing their bags this week for a 10-day European excursion. The Spartans will travel to Europe from August 19-28 making stops in Rome, Italy, Paris, France and London, England.
Michigan State will play in an exhibition game in each country, while making side excursions to Normandy, France and Oxford, England. A visit to the Eiffel Tower, Coliseum and other European icons is on the agenda.
“I’m excited to spend time with my teammates and family. I love to travel and it’s great to be able to do it with people I love, my mom is making the trip so it will be cool to experience it all with her,” said Tori Jankoska, MSU senior guard.
This bonding time will be good for team chemistry as the Spartans add five newcomers to this year’s roster. Michigan State finished the 2015-16 season with a 25-9 overall record, and returns two All-Big Ten honorees in senior Tori Jankoska and redshirt-junior Branndais Agee.
Transfers Taya Reimer (Notre Dame) and Shay Colley (South Carolina) look to add depth to the team alongside the three incoming freshman, guard Mardrekia Cook, guard Taryn McCutcheon and forward Nia Hollie.
This Eurotrip marks the first time the seven returning Spartan letterwinners and four newcomers (Colley has to sit out this season), will hit the court against another team. Overseas trips providing a unique experience and proving to be a staple in MSU athletics.
“Michigan State puts us on a platform that a lot of other women's basketball teams don't get and I feel extremely lucky to play here, it was one of the reasons I wanted to play here because they put women’s basketball up there right underneath men’s basketball and football,” said Jankoska. “I think it’s good for both basketball wise and camaraderie, we come together as a team, we will spend a lot of time together and we learn about each other both on and off the court.”
