MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Police Department has a warning for homeowners in the Township.

There is a vendor in the area soliciting homeowners and occupants to have their street numbers painted on the curb.

Although the Township doesn't object to people having this service done, they would like to warn residents that curb painted addresses do not satisfy the requirements of the Township ordinance.

Ordinance section 14-149 requires that street addresses be displayed on the portion of the house that faces the street or on a permanent sign near the street, both of which have to be at least four feet above the ground.

"The ordinance requires that there be numerals above the ground level and of a certain size so that in case of an emergency, police officers or emergency medical personnel will be able to identify the house and respond quicker," said Assistant Police Chief Ken Plaga.

The street numbers must be displayed in Arabic numerals specifically and be a minimum of four inches in height.

Street numbers placed on mailboxes also do not replace this requirement.

Residents are urged to contact the Meridian Township Police if they see a vendor in their neighborhood distributing fliers for this service.

"To be someone who goes door-to-door and solicits services, you have to be registered with the Township," said Plaga.
