LANSING - It is that time of the year again, when we see former and current local athletes who have left a special make in their communities be recognized for it.

The Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame inducted the Class of 2016 on July 28.

Members of the class include East Lansing High School graduate, former University of Michigan offensive tackle and current play-by-play voice of Michigan football and Detroit Lions color analyst Jim Brandstatter, Mason High School graduate, former Michigan State University and WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs basketball player Kristin Haynie and Olympic gold-medalist in gymnastics Jordyn Wieber.

Other inductees are Jeff Callard, Mike Creaser, Cliff Foster, Alan Haller, Bob Gross, Mary Mauro and Craig Teft.

The 1977 DeWitt Boys Cross Country team and the 2000 Waverly boys’ basketball team were inducted and recognized for its state championship titles in their respective years.

The Dick Letts Community Service Award, an award given to “citizens whose work, efforts and dedication have improved the quality of life and afforded opportunity to youth through sports and recreational activity,” (lansinghalloffame.org), was awarded to Carl Wagner, a long-time youth baseball coach in Mid-Michigan.

He coached for nearly 50 years.

Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Bob Every said that the purpose of the Hall of Fame is to give the community something to look up to and be proud of.

Every said that most people don’t know the athlete is even from the area until they see they were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
