MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Road construction may be a typical sighting during the summer, but now railroad construction can also be seen.

The Hagadorn Road railroad crossings between Service Road and Shaw Lane is closed from July 5th through July 22nd.

This closure is a result of Canadian National Railroad Company’s reconstruction of the crossing.

With a detour set to Mt. Hope Road to Farm Lane to Grand River Avenue (northbound) and Shaw Lane to Farm Lane to Mt. Hope Road (southbound). There are bright orange signs guiding the detour for drivers and pedestrians.

Michigan State University student, Joyce Li said the closure has created some blockage when she walks from campus to restaurants located directly after the railroad crossing.

“I think it has kind of blocked the way and It has some impact for the pedestrians to even cross by,” she said. “It’s causing some inconvenience.”

In addition, the Ingham County Road Department has a separate construction project on Hagadorn Road and Mt. Hope Road intersection. As they are adding southbound left turn lane and improving signal operations. This project also requires Hagadorn Road north of Mt. Hope Road to be closed through traffic.

Any traffic running through Hagadorn Road–Mt. Hope Road and the Canadian National Railroad Company can travel through the Ingham County Road Department project in one lane, each direction and at all times.

Ingham County Road Department coordinated their construction to occur during the railroad crossing closure to minimize overall road closure timespan.

With the railroad project proposed to finish before the end of July, Li said it’s nice to know it won’t be an issue when the Fall classes begin.

Ingham County Road Department anticipates Hagadorn Road to be completely open by late August.
