MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At their June 21 meeting, the Meridian Township Board passed a motion to have Park Lake Road striped with 10 foot lanes.
This was done in an effort to accommodate local bicyclists who travel down the road.
Kevin Schumacher, a Meridian Township resident, believes that Park Lake Road is dangerous for bicyclists because of the lack of designated bicycle lanes and that narrower driving lanes will be a step toward a resolution.
“Frequently cars come too close to somebody who’s on a bike,” said Schumacher. “Sometimes you can feel the side view mirror literally whisk past your arm.”
According to Schumacher, in addition to giving bicyclists more room, he hopes that the narrower lanes will slow traffic.
In order for the project to begin, it must first be approved because it will be accomplished using federal funds.
The Ingham County Road Department is submitting the request, and if approved, will also be completing the project.
If the request is denied, a second choice would be to leave only the center line marked and paint share the road symbols on the road on the areas near the curb.
