EAST LANSING - It may not look like it from all of the cranes, trucks and orange cones but there has been some "Magic" happening around the Breslin Student Events Center through improvements and additions. These building renovations are projected to be predominantly completed by August 2017 and fully completed by June 2018.

Construction began in January of this year and is currently on schedule and budget approximated at $50 million. This estimate includes a 26,000 square-foot addition to the building concourse including restroom and concession stand upgrades, site security and overall infrastructure improvements.

Also included in this estimate is a 33,000 square-foot addition to the Berkowitz Basketball Complex, which when finished will be home to the Michigan State Basketball Hall of History and many other facility upgrades including a new strength and conditioning center.

"What excites me about these renovations is that there really is something for everyone," said Michigan State Basketball Head Coach Tom Izzo. "Jaws will drop when fans enter the Hall of History. Current student-athletes will benefit from the new weight room and former players will enjoy a locker room reserved just for them. The entire package should really excite recruits."

Although the expansion is taking place in the southeast corner where the Earvin “Magic” Johnson Statue originally was built, the landmark will still remain apart of the new and improved events center entryway. It was recently uprooted using a 500-ton crane and placed about 100 feet east in a temporary area.

The statue itself weighs approximately 187,000 pounds, according to the Construction Project Manager Jason Van Zee. When the Hall of History construction is complete “Magic” should sit about 150 feet south of his former position says Van Zee.

According to Michigan State University IPF, the goals of these renovations are to extend the life of the facility, improve amenities, increase revenue and “enhance the overall Spartan experience.” With over 100 games and events held at the student events center each year, the building will still remain fully functional and fans attending fall events can look forward to seeing some finished areas.
