LANSING - Coffee and donuts are the start to every Tuesday for these Tuesday Toolmen. As they socialize, create a plan of action, and head off to do a service that helps the community with one tool at a time.
Paul Baerman who has been apart of Tuesday for 4 years says, "In the summer time we do handicap rams, for people who are in wheelchair or otherwise bound to their house. We start at nine o'clock in the morning usually and by three o'clock in the afternoon these people are free to move out of their house by themselves independently, and it's just a wonderful thing. I mean these people who are house bound are now latterly free and independent and it's just a wonderful feeling."
Helping low-income seniors, adults, and children with permanent disabilities by simply providing free repairs, safety modifications and outside work. The toolmen go above and beyond to help make their customers feel comfortable and ultimately empowered after their work is completed.
From building ramps to hanging storm doors, to electrical and plumbing, there's nothing these Tuesday Toolmen won't do. Fixing and replacing gutters, reconstructing outside furniture, installing and replacing carbon monoxide and fire alarms are just a few things the toolmen worked on to help cancer survivor Pamula Foster.
"They fix different things as far as outdoor lighting that i can't do myself because I'm not an electrician, and I'm not talented in that area so they're really filling in a lot of gaps that I needed filled in to make my home safe and comfortable," says Foster.
Working diligently to complete tasks, teamwork, laughter, and a welcoming smile plays a huge factor into the Tuesday Toolmen charming and hard work ethic. Not expecting anything in return for their volunteer service, the tool men always put in 110 percent. As a surprise and special thank you for their hard work and service Foster treated the men to a homemade lunch and lemonade to beat the heat.
With the hard work and service the Tuesday Toolmen put in it's, often times it's not about the service but the lasting impression these gentlemen leave behind as they not only impact but change people lives every Tuesday, one tool at a time.
Overwhelmed with the love of the Tuesday Toolmen, Foster says "The gentleman have always been very kind polite and considerate. They're fixing things that I can not afford to have fixed, and that I do not know how to do myself. It's a real blessing, it's two folds."
