MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The once upon sand pit is a now a brand new attraction for the Harris Nature Center– a Fossil Dig.

On June 15th, the center held a dedication ceremony, announcing the Nature Exploration Area addition’s opening.

Visitors can dig for fossils while also learning about their discoveries. There are interpretive signs surrounding the site, informing the diggers on their fossilized rock findings.

The Harris Nature Center Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises money for their efforts. Harris Nature Center Coordinator Kit Rich said the Fossil Dig was a collaboration of donations and volunteer work from the community.

This has been a three year project, that Harris Nature Center Foundation President Patty Robbins started.

Robbins said as far as she knows there is nothing like this Fossil Dig in Michigan or anywhere else.

"It's about Michigan Fossil History. We didn't throw in little dinosaurs or things that weren't found in Michigan," Robbins said. "So it is authentic."
