MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - If you are planning to take your boat out onto the water, be sure to keep the rules and regulations of the water as well as the ways to stay safe fresh in your mind.

Sergeant Dan Sump of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office explains how to stay safe when you are out on the lake.

"Make sure you've got enough life jackets on the boat, so that everyone has a means in case something happens and they fall overboard, and they can save their lives with a life jacket on there."

In addition to keeping plenty of life jackets on board, you should be knowledgeable about the rules of the water including who gets the right-of-way.
