LANSING - Celebrating the Memorial Day holiday weekend is a major thing to look forward to for many people and it is the kick off for summer travel. The Michigan State Police (MSP) are working day and night in efforts to keep people traveling, safe and careful this weekend.

MSP will be joining their counterparts, Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) to take an initiative in traffic safety and to enforce "Click It or Ticket". According to AAA more than 350,000 motorists will be on the road this holiday weekend.

Operation C.A.R.E goals for the holiday are to deter aggressive driving, impaired driving, and failure to use occupant restraints.

“In addition to looking for safety belt and child restraint violations, troopers will pay special attention to drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and drugs or are driving in a reckless and unsafe manner", stated Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP.

With gas prices being the lowest for this Memorial Day weekend in the last 11 years, 55 percent are more likely to take road trips over the three day period. AAA presumes more than 38 million people will travel this weekend to destinations all across the world, projecting Orlando, FL to be the number 1 spot this year.

For those flying to their destinations, it is recommended to arrive early to the airport to get through the anticipated large lines at TSA checkpoints.

Since the number of fatalities over Memorial Weekend has increased over the last year, MSP will be enforcing seat beats and safe driving to ensure a decrease in deaths.

Last year, six fatal traffic crashes resulted in eight deaths over the Memorial Day weekend.
