MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Its been one year since the discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease in Meridian Township. CWD is disease similar to Mad Cow Disease that threatens the local deer population.

Throughout the first week of June, the Michigan Department of Natural Resource held multiple open forum breakfast Q&A's throughout the area in order to update and inform concerned citizens.

One such breakfast was at Blondie's Barn in Haslett, on Thursday, June 2. DNR officers Conducted a presentation for those in attendance about the how the containment of CWD is coming along. Multiple other township, county, and state officials were also on hand to answer questions.

"We've seen what works and doesn't work and right now we're implementing the best methods that we know that have been reasonably successful in other locations." - Chad Stewart, Michigan DNR Deer Specialist

The DNR will be updating hunting regulations this coming season in order to facilitate their updated approach.

The prime focus remains Meridian Township, although the area of concern has grown to the entire six-county area.
