LANSING - With an overall record of 22-20, the Lansing Lugnuts headed into a three-game streak against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
The Lugnuts pulled off a close 4-3 win on Tuesday night, improving to a 23-20 overall record, and 12-9 at home.
Game two, an early one at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday, came with a little more strength on the Lugnuts' side, keeping the TinCaps scoreless until the very last inning.
No runs in the first, and no runs in the second, but the bottom of the third was a game changer for Lansing.
The Lugnuts get two runs to take the lead against Fort Wayne.
Strong pitching on both sides allowed no runs in fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Lansing took flight at the bottom of the seventh.
Ryan Hissey waited on third base, and trotted home as Gunnar Heidt hit the ball far in the outfield.
Josh Almonte got another outfield hit for the Lugnuts.
All the way from first base, Heidt hesitated at second, making sure he still had time, made it to third and slid home before the TinCaps' catcher cought the pass.
On Almonte's turn to get a run, Carl Wise gave him just enough time with the hit.
The Lugnuts lead, 5-0, at the bottom of the seventh.
Two more innings to go, but the eighth didn't change anything.
In their last chance to catch up, Fort Wayne brought some energy at the top of the ninth.
A hit by Jhonatan Pena went far past second base.
The Lugnuts took some time to catch the ball and gave the TinCaps a double run, by Brad Zunica and Ty France.
The Lugnuts got three TinCaps out before they had a chance to catch up.
Lansing topped Fort Wayne for the second day in a row, but this time 5-2.
The Lugnuts improve their record to 24-20, while the TinCaps' overall record falls to 23-23.
Their third and final matchup will be at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, also at the Cooley Law School Stadium.
