HASLETT - The loss of a loved one often comes with unimaginable grief. However, eighth grader Andrew Witkus is turning that grief into something positive.

For the last few weeks, the Witkus family has been spending a lot of time in their basement, sorting through boxes and boxes filled to the brim with books. And it's all in honor of Andrew's sister Sarah.

"She cared about everybody and she put their priority in front of hers," said Witkus.

Sarah had been suffering from a disease called ulcerative colitis, and on April 10, a severe flare of the disease took her life at the age of eleven.

"I missed my sister a lot and so I wanted to take something that she really liked to help people," said Witkus.

Because Sarah loved to read, Andrew put out a call for a book drive in her memory. The response was much more than they expected.

Every day the Witkus family comes home to find about four boxes on their porch, and so for after three weeks there have been four thousand books that have been given. Out of those four thousand books dropped off on their porch, eight hundred have already been donated to local places in need.

Now for years to come, Sarah's compassion and kindness will be felt by thousands of others through the pages of Sarah's library.

"I'm just really happy about everything and how everybody is helping," said Witkus.
