OKEMOS - The East Lansing JV softball team took a right turn after a tough loss to defeat Okemos, 31-7, on Wednesday night.

The Trojans are coached by former MSU student Stephanie McNees, who lead the team to the victory with strong on-the-field coaching and communication.

"So actually yesterday we came out of a huge loss," McNees said. "We've had a pretty up and down season, a lot of rain outs, a lot of scheduling, things like a lot of dropped games, so we haven't gotten to play as much as we'd like to and we had a big loss yesterday. So today it was really just trying to focus on them, building their attitudes, coming up as a team, and I really think they did that today."

East Lansing sprinted away from the Chiefs starting from the first inning.

By the end of the fourth, the Trojans lead by triple of Okemos' score, 21-7.

The fifth and last inning was no different and East Lansing showed no mercy.

"Skill-wise really learning how to sit on pitches, it's really learning how to see the ball, field, you know, they had a lot of errors yesterday so they really improved today," McNees said. "Attitude-wise sportsmanship, they are learning how to, I mean they got bead bad yesterday and they know how that feels, and so today we don't steal all day. We're not trying to run up scores on teams like we get run up so. So just really teaching them how to be good sports and how to have good attitudes, especially in games like this."

With full bases, the Trojans' fourth batter advanced to first base and gave the team a walk-off run.

Nine more of those made it 31, when Okemos was able to get three opponents out.

The East Lansing pitcher gave the Chiefs had a chance to score more runs, but the Trojans were quick on getting the batted balls and passing it to first base, eliminating two girls.

Okemos' sealed the Trojans' victory with three strikes at bat.

McNees is a Michigan State University graduate and in her second year of coaching.

"My first time head coaching last year was good experience, and this year I kind of feel like an old pro," McNees said. "I love it now, I can't ask for anything better."

Next on the schedule, East Lansing will face Lansing Sexton at 4 p.m. on Monday, while Okemos travels to Holt at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
