EAST LANSING - Okemos' Sarah Williams forever etched her name in the annals of the Chiefs' state rivals Rockford when she whipped in the game-winning shot to advance her team, 6-5, to the state semifinals.
"This team has worked so hard this year for everything, so to see them basically lead the entire way, to pull it out when they got challenged at the end, was great to see as a a coach." Okemos head coach Matt Latham said after the thriller. "I joke, I am getting to old for this. These games are too close, but a win's a win."
Okemos and Rockford, accounting for six of the last seven MHSAA Division I state titles, are the perennial girls water polo programs in the state.
Okemos would go onto lose to Hudsonville in the state semifinals, 19-7. The Eagles won the second half, 10-1.
