HASLETT - The Haslett girls tennis team defeated Waverly on Tuesday, April 19.

The overcast weather was perfect for playing, according to head coach Henry Brunnschweiler, allowing the Vikings to win every match.

"I'm really happy with our effort out here today, this is our fourth match of the season, and we're coming out this is our fourth day in a row we've competed," Brunnschweiler said. "I was a little worried about the girls being a little worn out, but it turned out they played really well. I've seen a lot of steady play. It's kind of an overcast day so it's been great for tennis."

Haslett's No. 1 and No. 2 players came out with a big victory, both winning 2-0.

As both served, Waverly athletes struggled to return the serve or faster hits.

Doubles was also a success for the Vikings, but those didn't come without some struggle.

Because the team is young, there is still much to be improved, but Brunnschweiler said he is happy with where the girls are now, having competed in three matches in the previous three days.

"I think there's always some concern you wanna get some practice in, so when you have the girls competing so many days in a row, you almost wanna stop, take a break for a day, practice somethings you saw and some observations you had. We haven't had a chance to do that," he said.

Instead, he has had to coach the girls only by talking them through matches.

"We've been able to go through with girls verbally what we want to see them do, but we have a nice stretch for the rest of the week," Brunnschweiler said. "We have three straight days of practice if the weather holds out. We're gonna correct a few things and hopefully keep improving. I'm really happy with where we're at in our second week of play."

Looking forward, Brunnschweiler wants to take time to help improve the younger girls' skills.

"We're kind of a young team, so a lot of our doubles teams we gotta work on being aggressive getting to the net, playing a little more aggressively up there, communicating a little bit better," he said. "I'd like to see our singles players continue to work on their match-play toughness, consistency, and just over those next couple days of practice just work on one simple drills to correct some of those things."

Haslett will have three consecutive days of practices to recuperate and learn what to improve on.

The Vikings will travel to Dewitt and play at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 26.
