OKEMOS - The Okemos girls water polo team topped Mason, 18-6, in a district game on Thursday.
The Chiefs and the Bulldogs started the game very even, ending up tied, 2-2, at the end of the first period.
Okemos picked up the energy in the beginning of the second and kept it high.
Okemos No. 10 on fire with goals and assists, working around the Mason defense to get the ball close to the goal.
The Chiefs score seven goals in the second period and only allow one in their own, ending up 10-3 at halftime.
"I thought the varsity team got stronger as the gas progressed,” said Okemos Head Coach Matthew Latham. This is our first game after spring break, which is always kinda interesting to see, kinda get back in the swing of things. First quarter Mason did a lot of good things, they kinda kept us off balance, but we held firm."
Mason is able to get through the Okemos defense a few more times and score three goals, one of them being a penalty throw.
Okemos can’t be stopped when they score eight more in the remaining half, and end up taking home the win, 18-6.
The Chiefs’ overall record is now 8-1 and they are ranked second in the AP Coaches Poll, something Latham said might be too high for them because he still wants his team to grow.
Okemos plays at Hudsonville High School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and faces Troy High School at 6 p.m. at home on Wednesday.
