HASLETT - After moving up classes for the 2015-16 year, Haslett High School is moving back from A to B.
Classifications for the 2016-17 school year are based on the number of students enrolled in athletics during the second semester of the previous school year, Spring 2016.
From the 751 tournament-qualified schools, 187 were put in Class A, and 188 in Class B, C and D.
The division according to students is as following: a school with 881 or more students were placed in Class A; schools with 412-880 students in athletics were placed in Class B; Class C enrollment limits are 207-411; Class D consists of schools with 206 or fewer students enrolled in sports.
While 22 schools moved up classes, 17 moved down.
Along with Haslett, schools that moved from Class A to Class B were Jackson Northwest, Lansing Eastern and Saginaw Arthur Hill.
The following are schools that moved up from Class B to Class A: Coldwater, Detroit International Academy, Melvindale, New Boston Huron and Warren Fitzgerald.
According to MHSAA's "2016-17 School Year Classification Announced" press release, schools are allowed to compete in classes higher than their own, but they must choose to do so by April 15 for fall sports and October 15 for spring sports.
If that choice is made, the school must compete in the higher class for a minimum of two years.
