HASLETT - A year after making school history by leading the Haslett Varsity Girls Basketball Team to its first State Championship Game, Head Coach Bob Currier told school officials he would be stepping down from his position.

"It was right before Spring Break, so late March I got an email and then had a conversation with Bob that he was going to resign his position. Actually you know it is resign but to me it’s retire, he’s a dentist in his day job and he’s going to sell that practice as well. He kind of always said to me when he decided to sell his dental practice then he would be done with coaching too," says Haslett Athletic Director Darin Ferguson.

Currier's team has been ranked every season in the top polls during his tenure and last season he led the Vikings to the Class B State Title Game against Detroit Country Day but they fell short.

The past three seasons Currier has led the charge for the Vikings to at least a share of the CAAC Red Conference Championship.

Ferguson says it is more of a celebratory milestone. "Mines more of congratulations you know, once you get to that point where he’s worked hard all his life and he’s done a great job here coaching basketball but it’s more of a celebration. I don’t want him to leave and I would love him to stay but he’s at the point now where he can retire and move on and enjoy retirement so that’s kind of what I explained to him because he it was a tough decision for him because he liked doing it."

His replacement has not been named yet. The position was posted last Monday, April 11th and will close this Friday, April 22nd. "We have probably already talked with five or six people via phone or email that are interested so I’m assuming we will get quite a few good applicants. After that I will form a committee and we’ll get rolling because I want to get it done here because obviously that person needs to make summer plans for what they’re going to do with their basketball team," says Ferguson.

It is said that Currier will be retiring at the end of the year and moving to Florida. "He spent more time in that gym than anybody. If he ends up in Florida somewhere he will probably find a local high school and help out coaching there, that wouldn't surprise me at all," says Ferguson.
