LANSING - Lansing Everett are going back to the Class A state semifinals, and they did it without Batman and Robin.
In a double overtime thriller that led to the fouling out of Vikings top scorer Jamyrin Jackson, Everett still found a way to hold on, 63-54 over higher ranked Hudsonville with stifling defense.
"It was a total team effort for two of our starters to foul out in clutch moments, and us to be able to come out with a victory, I am so proud of them," Everett head coach Desmond Ferguson said after the win.
Last season, Everett was carried by the dynamic duo of elite recruit Trevor Manuel and Jackson by his side. With Manuel gone, senior Jackson was looked upon as the unquestioned leader of this Vikings team. "Mr. March", as coined by coach Ferguson, did just that in the first four quarters of this quarterfinal victory with a game-high 24 points.
Fellow senior LeAndre White followed Jackson with 12 points and led his team into extra time.
"LeAndre and Jamyrin have just been leading this team, and everybody else have been following," Ferguson said.
"LeAndre, I don't even know if he came out the whole game, cramping up, and them guys, they just fought like never before."
After losing seven seniors from a season ago, Everett finished the regular season just 10-10, but in the postseason, its record did not matter.
"Blame it on the coach, but we had played no where near we should have during the regular season," Ferguson said.
"We started really defending, that's what it came down to."
