DELTA CHARTER TWP - Lansing Everett guard Jamyrin Jackson played second fiddle to Trevor Manuel in last season's deep playoff run, but this year it is Jackson's turn to play hero.
Jackson led the Vikings with all 22 of his points in the second half, closing the deal on Okemos, 61-48, en route to another district championship. Jackson, the number two scorer on Everett last season, took command Friday night, driving to the hoop at will.
"He had to step up into that roll," Lansing Everett head coach Desmond Ferguson said after the game. "Our second-leading scorer last year, obviously a lot of attention is going to be on him this year, he has done well with it. He played big for us tonight."
Everett learned from its last meeting with Okemos, a nail-biter that ended with the same result but a much closer score, 45-44.
"We were able to put on the defensive pressure, especially coming out of halftime," Ferguson said. "Get the ball out of Chaz's (Richardson) hands, who's their primary ball-handler and a great player. "
The Vikings made it to the Class A state semifinials last season, where they lost to Saginaw Arthur Hill. Despite losing Manuel, the team, as a whole, gained invaluable playoff lessons that are paying off this year.
"We have key guys from last year that went deep so I think experience has helped," Ferguson said.
"We our playing our best ball at this point, and we want to keep it going.
