EAST LANSING - Coming into the 2015-2016 high school hockey season, Jackson United's Alex Gwinn had not played organized hockey in over three years. Gwinn, now, leads a United (19-3-1) squad vying for a state championship.
"He was a good hockey player when he was younger and I think he got excited to come back, missed the game," Jackson United head coach Andy Sinkovitz said after his star's dominant performance.
Friday night, Gwinn's hat-trick against Eastside gave him a team-leading 38 goals on the season. The, 5-1, victory gave the Vikings their 14th straight win, as the team has not lost since Jan. 8, 2016.
Sinkovitz took reign of the team a season ago and has his Vikings just 51 minutes away from its second consecutive 20-win season.
"We just keep the same systems going that we have been running all year," Sinkovitz said. "Keep concentrating on our zone defense, that is our big thing right now."
United's defense held Eastside to just 10 shots on the night.
United plays Jackson Lumen Christi Saturday night, 7 p.m., at Optimist Ice Arena. Before Sinkovitz took over for United, Lumen Christi held a (23-2-1) advantage over the Vikings in the rivalry's history. Sinkovitz' United has won the last two straight meetings.
