OKEMOS - The Haslett basketball team is looking for redemption in Chief territory tonight at 7 pm as they face off in the Battle of Meridian. Last year Chiefs beat Haslett on Vikings home court 67 - 53. While the Vikings are looking to claim victory this year, a much larger battle will be going on to fight cancer.
Tonight’s game raises money & awareness for the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Challenge to fight cancer. This nationwide effort is a collaboration between coaches associations and the American Cancer Society. Okemos Athletics have participated in this event for several years. Tonight, coaches will be wearing suits and sneakers to raise awareness about the fight against cancer.
Okemos Athletic Director Ira Childress commented about Okemos athletes taking part in events like these, “I think it’s great. Obviously cancer is something that touches all of our lives. Think about it from a local level, causes like this are huge for the program. We’ve long done Coaches vs. Cancer, Volley for a cure, our soccer fundraiser last fall and other awareness events. It’s a small part we can do to raise awareness."
Varsity Boys Basketball Tip-off is at 7 pm tonight at Okemos High School.
