LANSING - Okemos (3-8) traveled to Don Johnson Fieldhouse Friday night to face a winless Lansing Eastern (0-11) squad, more than antsy to end the serious skid. In a total slugfest, Eastern finishes with a dramatic, 45-42, heart-aching victory.
Eastern took an early lead and played keep-away to lock down a W. Okemos never let the deficit grow to more than eight points, but excellent defense from Eastern, along with dominating time of possession, destroyed Okemos' field goal percentage and limited its shot selection.
"We were worried about defense," Eastern head coach Julius Edwards said after the game. "Defense, defense, defense, defense."
A total of 28 points scored in the first and third quarters, at times, this game was played at a snail's pace, something Chaz Richardson and the run-and-gun Okemos offense is not used to.
The Chiefs scored the most points (77) in head coach Jeff Wonch's tenure against Eastern on December 11, 2015. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months, and the Quakers, certainly, learned their lesson, slowing the game down from light-speed to a snail-pace.
"I think it's a sense of release for those guys," Edwards said about getting that first win. "It helps them gain a little bit of confidence."
The Quakers go for victory number two at Waverly Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Chiefs hope for a rebound Tuesday night, facing crosstown rival Haslett at 7:30 p.m., as well.
