EAST LANSING - Located at 1240 East Harrison Road, East Lansing's Amtrak station was the little station that couldn't.
Dating to at least 1974, the building was far too small and usually left travelers waiting in the harsh Michigan elements. It had also at some point picked up the nickname "The Rat Trap."
Its replacement was announced in 2012, with construction beginning in 2014. Located directly behind the 1974 station and on the same property, the new "Multi-Modal Gateway" officially entered service on Monday, January 25.
At over three time the size, the new building not only has room for travelers but also for improved facilities including restrooms, service desks, and maintenance areas.
The station also facilitates bus travel and features sizeable dedicated bus bays. Greyhound, Indian Trails, Megabus, and CATA, and features a dedicated taxi area.
The facility is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the waiting rooms at each corner of the facility remains open indefinitely. The Amtrak section is marked by high-visibility green.
